Musicians admire ambiguity that makes us think

2009.07.23 00:38

Uncertainties and metaphores that hide the true meaning behind is respected in any forms of art. For example, it can be observed when we listen to musics, look at pictures and reading poems. At the first glance, we can hardly understand what the artist is trying to say, because the art never gives you the true meaning. As music is a part of the art, people who create music have the same taste as other artists have. This does not confine itself in musical aspect, but it includes aesthetic sides. As always, musicians have to design album artworks and write lyrics. If they suck at this, their musical creation will not be as impressive to people as it would have if the artwork and lyrics had been better.

Permanence (2007) by Vassline

Musicians attempt to create ambiguous and new things to impress people. If their works are identical, nobody will find them worth listening as the uniqueness is missing. I have Vassline's 3rd full-length studio album 'Permenance' and it shows an example of ambiguity. Inside the album cover sheet, there are lyrics sheets as usual. However, somethings is different. While albums like Slayer's 'Raining Blood' persist to use plain texts, this album literally scribbles the whole lyrics. Being colourful and out-of-order, it creates an atmosphere of enigma and perplexity.

The lyric sheet looks like this.

In my opinion, even though this kind of attempts have already been made by such artists as Mahatma in their album 'Perseverance'(the link is written in korean), this really builds particularity thus making the whole work appealing to listeners. Furthermore, I presume that Vassline wanted to express their anger and forged energy, and this was an effective and distinctive way of achieving the goal.

On the other hand, since the lyrics may not be intelligable to the listeners, they will hardly share the lyrics around. This causes problems of lacking information thus discouraging listeners from studying the album. For example, if some people want to do some vocal covers for the songs in the album, they are likely to give upon it as the information is seldom found.

I will try to post some lyrics for Vassline's songs, as I can't find them on the Google. I managed to find some lyrics on a Korean search engine. In that way people can overcome the lacking information and can be able to know more about the band.
