Unusual, how fascinating it sounds.

2011.02.13 16:10

We have all been attracted by things that are not normally around. For instance, exotic bulidings and languages spoken in faraway countries always ignite one's curiosity and passion for travel. It may be that people have grown so used to the things they can easily find that unusual phenomena or thoughts appeal to them.

This is also the case for the music. Genres come and go; they are created and put into the limelight, only to disappear behind the curtain in the future. If something stays the same, it will undoubtedly get fallen behind the ever-changing world. Hence, music always evolves according to or ahead of the appetite of the consumers.

Sometimes attempts to stand out go so far as to isolate the listeners. When musicians are overly concentrated in making their music unique and groundbreaking, their endeavers will yield something that is not enjoyable, or even tolerable, by today's prevailing paradigm. Although such works will be critically praised by some maniac listeners, the majority of the population will not be temped to take part in consuming such cultural artifacts.

All in all, it seems to me that creating something is an incessant combat between being original and being socially acceptable. Obviously one may not be able to achieve the both of them, since they are too very different, and almost polarized concept. Therefore one is left to wonder what the word 'unusual' would mean in a decade or two.
