Appearance belies one's being a metalhead

2010.09.30 16:51

One's taste of music does not necessarily go with how one might look to others; in fact, there is no coherent explanation that supports the relationship between those two discrete factors, yet we tend to assume a typical image of metalheads to be either a macho man or a dude with long hair. To me, it seems that the image that metal musicians have established so far is one reason that we have this misunderstanding. Those images might include cantankerous and mischievous nature represented by drug abuse or ruthless and contentious behaviours.

However, appearence tend to mislead in that people have every rights not to look like a typical metalhead, while listening to metal music. For instance, I recently got  to know a history teacher in my school who is a big fan of metal, whose favourites mainly include such bands as Katatonia and Opeth. Since I do not do History, I have never had a chance to acquaint with him and thus have always thought him as an ordinary old bloke. Nevertheless, now that I know him and his musical taste, I now recognise that I have to relinquish the stereotypical system of thinking that assumes mutual relationship between appearance and musical taste.
