Importance of becoming a biligual

2010.01.25 11:40

When people are given a term 'global,' most of them would conjure up English language. With no doubt, the most widely and commonly used langauge today is English. Nowadays, the borderlines and the concept of nationalism has faded in their meanings. Rather, the world is becoming a single big community. A theoretical physicist, Michio Kaku, claims the world will united as one in terms of cultures and language, and when it happens, the 'Type one language', as he names the dominant language, will be English. He also presumes that the 'Type one culture' will be Rock'n'roll alike.

In this process of globalisation, the culture is widely consumed in English. For example, the demand for the literature and music is predominant in English, although there are innumerable languages on the earth. Therefore, musicians whose first language is not English should learn how to use English properly.

In Flames is one of the many examples of the biligual musicians. They are a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Although it seems that their music refelcts on the country's myth and culture, people around the world can understand their lyrics in English. Their early work, 'Jotun', conveys their longing and wonder for the gigantic creature that appears in the Northern Europe mythology. Had the lyrics been written in other languages than English, I would never have been able to comprehend the theme. Furthermore, their fluent English contributes to the interviews in which they can communicate with the fans.

In conclusion, musicians should be biligual for their further success in the world. Although it seems unfair because those who speak English have natual advantage, it is inexorable in order to meet the demand. It does not mean that they should overlook their own culture and language. Rather learning English is just a pragmatic approach to the globalisation. Let us be the biligual otherwise we will miss out.
